Australian Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment, Hon Dan Tehan MP’s visit to Paris
Last week, Australian Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment, Hon Dan Tehan MP travelled to Europe and the United Kingdom for further Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations and to promote investment opportunities in Australia and discuss vaccine supply.
On 21 April, Minister Tehan arrived in Paris and met with French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Jean-Yves Le Drian. The Ministers reaffirmed the importance of the enhanced strategic partnership between France and Australia and their cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.
Minister Tehan also met with French Minister Delegate for Foreign Trade and Economic Attractiveness, Franck Riester, for the 2nd session of the bilateral dialogue on Trade and Investment between France and Australia. During the bilateral dialogue, Minister Tehan and Minister Riester welcomed the continuing development of economic and trade relations between France and Australia, despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2019, French stock of foreign direct investment in Australia amounted to $13 billion, while Australian stock of FDI in France came to €2 billion in the same year. 600 French companies employing 70,000 workers are currently established in Australia and more than 140 Australian companies operate in France.
Minister Tehan and Minister Riester also reviewed bilateral trade investments and opportunities in strategic fields including critical minerals, renewable energy, hydrogen, space and agriculture. Both Ministers underlined the crucial role played by international trade towards the post-COVID-19 economic recovery and expressed their wish for a swift conclusion to the ongoing negotiations for a FTA between Australia and the European Union.
During his visit to Paris, Minister Tehan met with senior executives from Neoen and Air Liquide to discuss Australia’s growing renewable energy industry and hydrogen production potential.
